Short Route

Approx 50 miles

Starting as usual from Escape Bike Shop, our short route for 2019 takes you along the back roads to Burton In Lonsdale, to Tunstall and the beautiful village of Barbon – famous for Church Mouse Cheeses and very cycle friendly.

From here the route takes you up Barbondale, a truly stunning valley and local favourite for its rolling gradient and beautiful views, before dropping steeply down into Dent. Passing through the pretty village we follow the peaceful River Dee along the dale before the climb takes you up to Newby Head – this is pretty steep so don’t be afraid to get off and walk – you won’t be the first!

Turning right at Newby head we join the main road to the Ribblehead viaduct where the views are truly stunning. At the viaduct the route turns left where a rolling descent gets the legs spinning down the valley to the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale for our food stop. There’s great views of Pen-y-ghent all the way down the valley (weather permitting) so make sure to have a good look around as you ride.

Setting off suitably refreshed we continue to Helwith Bridge, turning right here along quiet country lanes through Wharfe, Austwick and Clapham as we head back towards Ingleton, over Clapham Old Road and the last proper climb of the day.  A fast roll into Ingleton where we turn right and head back towards Escape Bike Shop passing the enticing beer garden at the Marton Arms before ambling through the back lanes on our return to the shop.  Phew, made it! Sit back, have a rest and an Escape to the ‘ales beer!
